Opening Friday, October 21st at Inner State Gallery, Brooklyn artist and designer Kevin Lyons brings his Monsters to Detroit to party, riot and rap; play and build; cipher and slow roll. In homage to Detroit native J Dilla, Lyons created a series of 31 donuts named after each track on Dilla’s classic Donuts album. The 31 unique wooden donut characters were individually cut, painted, and screenprinted during his residency here at Inner State studios. Also on view, a new set of one-of-a-kind "Monster Party" screenprints, each with its own hand-painted colorway, and new watercolor drawings.
Joining Lyons at Inner State will be Detroit-based artist Ellen Rutt, who exhibits an entirely new collection of mixed media pieces, along with an immersive installation for her solo exhibition Getting in Shape. With her latest body of work Rutt experiments using play as a method of understanding oneself, to find an opportunity to be immersed in nonsense and walk away with a narrative. Her playful approach to color and shape continues to evolve throughout her latest body of work.
